Functioning Things: Impermanent
Phenomena (bhava, dngos bo)
This is the category of existents which function. They function in producing
effects, in disintegrating each moment and in being the objects of sense consciousnesses, among other
functions. The definition of functioning thing is able to perform a function (don byed nus pa). There are no
permanent phenomena which are able to perform a function.
Impermanent phenomenon, product, cause, composed phenomenon, and effect are all synonymous with
functioning thing. These are also called compounded phenomena because they are made in dependence on
the aggregation of causes and conditions.
