Consciousness (jnana, shes pa)

This division of functioning thing is consciousness, defined as ‘clear and knowing’.

Consciousness is divided into two types:

mind (citta, sems)
mental factors (chaitta, sems byung)

A mind is the knower of the mere entity of an object, whereas a mental factor is a knower which, on the basis of observing that object, engages in the object from the point of view of other features, such as function and so forth.
