3. Grammatical Analysis



The source for the grammatical analysis employed by the translators originated at The University of Virginia Tibetan Studies Program, under the direction of Jeffrey Hopkins. The system has been refined by Joe Bransford Wilson, University of North Carolina Wilmington, and can be found in his excellent textbook on Classical Tibetan: Translating Buddhism From Tibetan (Snow Lion Publications, Ithaca, New York)(hereinafter Wilson). The translators teach Classical Tibetan using Wilson and will make extensive reference to it.

We hope that those of you who want to learn to read classical Tibetan have purchased a copy of Translating Buddhism From Tibetan from Snow Lion and are studying it very carefully, paying particular attention to the memorization of all paradigms in the Appendices. Familiarity with these paradigms greatly increases one’s ability to read Tibetan.
