Aryadeva's remark that ``without thought there is no . . . desire and so forth" may lead one to conclude that being imputed by thought alone is enough to draw one into desire. However, it is not, since even things that exist are merely imputed by thought. To be drawn into desire you also need an improper mental application. For this reason Nga-wang-bel-den glosses conceptual consciousness here as meaning conceptual consciousnesses that are both improper mental application and imputation by a conceptual consciousness.
