Introduction to the three modes

In order for a syllogism to be correct,the three modes of a correct syllogism must all be true.

• Property of the subject

  

  The subject is the reason (1 is 3): sound is impermanent.

• Forward pervasion

  

  The reason is pervaded by the predicate of the thesis (whatever is 3 is necessarily 2): whatever is a product is necessarily impermanent.

• Reverse pervasion

  

  The opposite of the predicate of the thesis is pervaded by the opposite of the reason (whatever is not 2 is necessarily not 3): whatever is not impermanent is necessarily not a product..
